There were more students to audition this year (especially Sop's) than in years past, over 2000 across the state! So, there was very stiff competition! A big kudos to all that went through the audition process, as it is a fantastic learning experience.

Mr. Rob Harper, Executive for Children's Hospital, will be hosting a cooking demo/class on Sat. November 13, from 10:30am-12:00pm. Mr. Harper will "mock prepare" the menu below, answering questions and discussing the processes involved. Then, all in attendance will sample the dishes he has prepared. Tickets are $15/person and can be purchased from any choir member. Limited seating. Call Mrs. Heron if any questions. Spread the word!!

Order forms for the cheesecake/cookie dough/loaf cakes are due THIS THURSDAY (9-23-10) to Mrs. Heron. Remember, the money is not due now, as it will be collected when the merchandise is delivered (that will be mid-October). Every student is encouraged to sell their "fair share" of ten items. Many will go above and beyond the call of duty, but everyone please try to sell at least ten!

Summer is over and I am THRILLED already, as I have heard some great things from the students in each of the choirs! I am certain that this year will be packed out with some stellar performances and great memories!

Please bring the signed form from the back of your Choral Handbook to me by Monday (8-16), and make sure to get your forms from your MJ Student handbook signed to return to your first block teachers.

Rhythmx to sing at the University of Alabama

The men's ensemble Rhythmx will be performing at the University of Alabama on Tuesday, April 27, 2010 at 7:30pm in the Recital Hall. Check out this article in the Crimson Tide newspaper.

We will be taking both the Chamber and Concert Choirs to State Performance Adjudication Festival on Friday, March 26th. We need at leat 6 chaperones to ride the busses with us. We will leave the school at 8:00am and return at 1:00pm, stopping for lunch on the way back to school.

Spring Concert

It will begin at 7:00pm at Enon Baptist Church and will feature music of all genres, including classical, gospel, pop, and jazz. Congrats to the members of the Chamber Choir. They received straight Superior scores from all 3 stage adjudicators and the sightreading adjudicator at District Performance Evaluations last week. They will advance to the State level in April, which will be held at Meadowbrook Baptist Church. Great job, students! (Except basses, that 6 to #4!!!)

Also, existing members need to try on their tux/dress from last year and make sure it still fits. I can order single items for the guys if need be.

AMEA Performance Time

The Chamber Choir will perform at the Alabama Music Educator's Conference at the University of Alabama on Thursday, January 22, 2009 at 11:00AM in the Moody Concert Hall. This is a prestigious accomplishment for this group. Parents, make sure to take off work and attend this 30 minute concert of these fabulous young musicians.

You should take the time to read over the material as many questions will be addressed, including grading procedure, attire purchases, etc. On the back page is a "Notice of Receipt" to be signed by both you and your child. Congratulations Chamber Choir

The MJHS Chamber Choir was selected (by application, including past recordings, programs, and recommendations) to perform at the Alabama Music Educator's Association (AMEA) State Conference in January at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. This is a prestigious opportunity and will be heard by an audience of music educators from all over the state.

I am SO excited about this year and all the new changes! Although there will be some initial confusion and "getting used to", I am certain that the year will bring much more opportunity for learning and growing. I am working on assimilating a schedule for the year and will send it home with students on Monday (and Tuesday) of next week. Congratulations to the new members of Chamber Choir! We had some outstanding students that auditioned, eight of which scored high enough to become a member. Thanks to all who worked hard, stressed out, and went through the audition. I heard some really fine progress and many of you will certainly be ready by auditions next year. Hang in there!!

San Antonio awards

The Chamber Choir received ALL Superior scores at the San Antonio competition. They also received the "Spirit of San Antonio" Award, given to, out of all the bands and choirs at the festival, the group who best represented their school, community and state in a respectful and commendable manner. Hey, not only can they sing fabulously, they know how to act too!! Much thanks to the parent chaperones on the trip--You made my job easy!!

If anyone would like some extra credit points, a great concert opportunity is the All-State Choir concert. It will be at Samford University in the Wright Center (large auditorium in front with columns) at 2 PM, Sat, March 15. ACDA Invitational

The Chamber Choir was selected as one of the top choirs in the state of Alabama to perform at the ACDA Choral Invitational Festival in February. Selections are made based on applications that include recordings of the ensemble for the past 3 years, various programs performed during that time, and awards and accomplishments. This is the second year for us to be selected. The festival will be held at the Alys-Stephens Center at UAB. Chamber Choir members had best be ready to work hard for the first several weeks of school, as we must put together a 20-minute program to perform!

Several students auditioned and all did very well. Keep in mind that this ensemble is quite competitive, as we have to keep the voice parts balanced. If you auditioned and did not make it, don't give up! Many of you scored high, but seniority also has to be considered. I saw vast improvements in all of you - even to my own surprise! Thanks to all of you who auditioned; I know it is quite a stressful event! Keep learning and keep a good attitude and it will pay off.

Fall Concert Videos/CDs

Many of you ordered Videos/DVDs/CDs of the Fall Concert in October. I have delivered CDs to those who ordered, but there was a problem with the videos. The video recorder was not switched "live sound", so there was no sound on our video. After many attempts by our church sound guys to make the video sound better, there was no success. So, I took the CD recording (which was very good) and the DVD (with no sound) and gave it to a computer genius (by the name of Micah Loggins) to see if he could put the sound onto the DVD. He is a busy guy, and had to try many things, but has completed this daunting task this week. I will be sending these home this week. And, BTW, the Winter Concert will be recorded correctly, as I will make sure b/f the concert begins....

Since Mrs. Heron is apparently moving into the 21st century, let's see if her faithful students will follow....This will be a place of communication and information gathering.
